Living in the Light: Blessings and Curses

Jesus’ famous “Sermon on the Plain” doesn’t hold back: “Blessed are you who are poor… but woe to you who are rich” etc! The shock value is the point: we think we know what God’s blessing looks like--success, comfort, joy--but no, Jesus says, you’ve got it all backwards. Can we listen again to these familiar words, especially when they’re targeted so directly at those of us with wealth and power, and reorient our lives around what really matters?
