Joy typically comes at the end of the story: we have a need, God responds, and then are joyful at receiving God's good gift.  Or is that how it always goes?  Sometimes, like Mary in the Christmas story, Joy comes at hearing God's voice even when the promised gift hasn't yet come.  Other times, Joy is a choice early in the story, perhaps even the active ingredient that sparks a change.  And what about stories where there is no joy to be found at all?

How do we know what we know?  Even the scientific knowledge that our society is built on is often less secure in its observations and theories than we assume or would like it to be.  Advent is a story of prophecy, some fulfilled and some yet to be--can we truly find peace in visions and promises that have not yet been realized?

On Eternity Sunday, the service in which WMC intentionally reflects on the significant losses of the past year, particularly the deaths of loved ones, where is our hope?  "'Comfort, comfort, my people' says your God" through the voice of the prophet Isaiah.  Like a mother in a rocking chair with an infant, God holds us close.
