What's the point of church?  We gather, we sing and pray, we enjoy one another's company, we work together...for what?  What, if anything, distinguishes church from the other communities--social groups, service organizations, recreational clubs, and many more--to which many of us belong?  The church is made up of people responding to the particular and peculiar call to follow Jesus.  What does that look like?

Mennonite Disaster Service responds to crisis situations across North America, helping to rebuild homes and lives after floods, fires, storms, and more.  Wildwood's Rick Friesen recently spend an extended time volunteering with MDS in a Detroit neighborhood that has had more than its share of trouble in various forms.  In this sermon Rick reports on what he experienced there and invites us to consider what it means to love and serve in the way of Jesus.

Sin.  Some Christians grew up with guilt pounded into their heads, from pulpits and parents alike.  Other Christians didn't/don't talk about sin at all, perhaps in reaction to the prior experience.  The biblical tradition does have a great deal to say about sin--with a multitude of voices emphasizing different pieces and telling different stories.  What can we learn?
