Think of your mental health as a cup.  Each experience, each stress point, adds a bit of water to your cup.  Not a big deal for many of us; our cups are spacious.  But some of us have cups that are already quite full--family histories, serious trauma, medical conditions, financial stress, etc.  In those times, our cups overflow, spilling quite easily.  What do we do when we're overloaded, even out of control?  Where do we find stability, regulation, healing?

Mental illness hurts.  It ruins lives, even ends them.  It breaks up relationships, strains families, interrupts careers, dashes hopes and dreams.  Where is God in the middle of all of this destruction?  Do we dare to ask that question for ourselves and our loved ones?  Do we have helpful answers for those who ask it?

The statistics are staggering: 1 in 5 Canadians will experience mental illness in their lifetime.  Whether this is you or someone in your circles of family and friends, mental illness will impact you sometime.  Beyond that, all of us have mental health with all of its complexity, whether yours is considered healthy or unhealthy.  What are the links between mental health and faith?  How can we move towards health and wholeness?  And how can we help someone who is hurting?
